PURPOSE OF A SOUNDTRACK

The Score - when the horn blows on 0:20 it continues to background noise then dulls out creating tension. Also in 2:04 the suspense created gets more dynamic. 3:03 when the army is heading towards the enemy the stringed instruments play a triumph sequence.

Dialogue or ADR - this is throughout this little section of speech.

Sound Design (Creating new sound)- 0:14 when the dragon lifts off the ground into the air, someone had to design that noise because no foley could be perfect for that sound as it doesn't exist.

Foley (sound using objects to create sound) - Horses breathing 0:17, horses galloping 0:33, 2:16 when the horse rider hits his sword against the his front lines arrows making clanging sounds. 3:22 when their armour is hitting against the impact of the horses run making their armour jingle. 3:31-3:33 running water.

Ambiance/Atmosphere (background noise) - this could include people cheering in 0:52 and 3:26 when the cheering and aggression of the riders are aiming towards one another it continues then moments later you hear the enemy let loose their bow and arrows.

The purpose of a Soundtrack
  •  Tells the audience how to feel
  •  Establish an atmosphere/mood, creates tension
  • Define a change of scene
  • Indicates a geographic location
  • Add dramatic effect - sooth or startle = horror film, silence sets the scene like something is about to happen
  • Stimulates/enhances visual imaging
  • Establish a time or  a place i.e oriental music heroic music, horns of battle commencing.
  • Define or give information about a character (often through a developing leitmotif), making the character have their own music
  • Subliminal story telling mode
  • Entice the imagination
  • Sets a pace for a scene, think action movie sequences such as the battle scene
  • Narrative role
  • Adds authenticity to a film (creates a sense of realism)
  • fills the soundscape
A soundtrack can enable an audience how to feel about a scene, such as empathy, sadness, excitement, nervous, happy ect.

Elements of a soundtrack

  • What is a film score and why is it used?
A film score is where the orchestra have to follow to create an atmosphere in the film. For example in Harry Potter they use stringed instruments to cause tension to their audience, making them feel emotion about what they're seeing.

  • What are Foley sound effects and why are they used?
Sound effects made by people on a floor/stage, creating sound that is missing from a film sequence and/or making the sound more interesting and more believable.
For example making a sound like swords swinging, they don't really make much noise, take a clothes hanger and start swinging that around it makes more of an impact.

  • What is ADR and why is it used?
Automated dialogue replacement, the art of syncing and matching noises to what's on the screen. Creating a different dialogue that replaces the first recording that isn't clear enough; interrupting sound, unneeded background noise.

  • What is the art of sound design?
Type of sound effects and creating new sound. Wall-e is an example because they design sound for inanimate objects.

PURPOSE OF A MUSIC VIDEO

What would you consider to be the main purpose of a music video? The main purpose of a music video is to entertain their audience, might be to invoke a reaction keeping the artist and/or band in the public eye or having a storyline. It promotes the music visually and ensures the song will be remembered.
In this industry especially it's all about making money. Miley probably didn't choose to take her clothes off and start singing in front of a camera, may be her record label told her to because it'll make it in the public eye and it will make people remember it.
Example: Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball. In a response to her fans reaction, she replied in saying that striping naked was a symbol of having nothing after her fiance broke up with her. The music video simply symbolizes her feelings about the whole ordeal.

What other purposes might there be of a music video?
Other purposes could include a political or social message, to establish and/or deliver an artists image or personality and creating an image to follow. Also the band/artist makes a profit for the recording and company.
Example: Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas. It has a political message about children and families that live in a less fortunate country/society. Making money for a charity

How might an artist extend their income through having a music video?
Extending their income could be a perfume the artist/band have created, music sharing websites such as spotify and iTunes, video games, biographies/autobiographies, CD's, clothes/jewellery/merchandise and the ticketmaster promotion tool to direct fans to buy tickets/gigs to see their band/artist live.
Example: One Direction - Best Song Ever. The music video simply promotes their new movie 'This is us' about their journey so far from coming third in the Xfactor.

Describe how and why music videos have been used to fill in for bands on tour or when otherwise unavailable?
If for some reason the band or artist is late  or there's some technical difficulty, sometimes they'd play a music video on the back screen of the stage. The reason for this is the organizers feel responsible for putting a show on for their audience who have paid money not to be delayed.
Example: When seeing Mcfly live on tour in early 2013, their supporting act The Vamps were late. In order for the audience not to get agitated, they played a music video from their Youtube channel explaining who and what the new band are.

Thinking back through the story and presently; how have music videos enabled an 'extension of outlets' (opened up ways to get music to the masses?)
Music videos have enabled extension of outlets by having music channels such as MTV, 4Music and Top Of The Pops. Also iTunes and Spotify are music sharing websites that allow their fans to download their favourite band/artists songs. These all enable the artists/bands to get their music global and accessable.
